USD 130,840 secured → 6 schools transformed → Hundreds of children gaining safe water, dignity, and modern education opportunities

When we invest in clean water, dignity, and education together, we don’t just improve schools, we change the trajectory of children’s lives.” – Rtn. Haran Ramachandran OAM

In the hills of Sri Lanka’s Badulla District, many children begin their school day carrying more than just books.

They carry the burden of unsafe drinking water.
The fear of illness.
The quiet humiliation of inadequate sanitation.

For some girls, the absence of safe toilets means missing school entirely.

For many students, digital learning remains something they hear aboutbut never experience.

This is the reality facing vulnerable rural and estate communities across Uva Province.

But in July 2026, that reality begins to change.

A Project Designed Around Human Dignity

The Rotary Foundation has officially approved and funded Rotary Global Grant GG2575820, titled:

“Safe Water, Clean Toilets, Smart Learning – Transforming 6 Schools in Badulla District, UVA Province”

With USD 130,840 fully secured, implementation is now set to commence, bringing lasting improvements to six underserved schools.

This is not simply an infrastructure project.

It is a community transformation initiative built around one simple belief:

A child should never have to choose between dignity and education.

What Will Change

The project will deliver an integrated solution across six schools, including:

  • Safe drinking water systems
  • Tube wells and water purification infrastructure
  • Gender-sensitive toilet facilities
  • Handwashing and hygiene stations
  • Smartboards and digital learning tools
  • Hygiene and digital literacy education programs

Together, these improvements will create safer, healthier, and more empowering learning environments for hundreds of students.

Why This Matters

Education outcomes are deeply connected to health and dignity.

Children cannot learn effectively when they are sick from contaminated water.

Girls cannot attend school consistently when sanitation facilities are unsafe or unavailable.

Teachers cannot prepare students for a modern future without access to technology.

This project recognises that sustainable educational change requires more than classrooms alone.

It requires the foundations of human well-being.

A Future Built on Sustainability

One of the project’s greatest strengths is its long-term sustainability.

Schools, local stakeholders, and community leaders have been actively involved in planning and implementation preparation.

Training programs will support ongoing maintenance, hygiene awareness, and technology adoption, ensuring the impact continues well beyond the project delivery period.

This is not short-term aid.

It is a lasting community investment.

Global Collaboration Creating Local Impact

The project demonstrates the power of international collaboration through Rotary and community partnerships.

Key Partners Include:

  • Rotary Club of Badulla (Host Club)
  • Rotary Club of Chatswood Roseville (International Sponsor)
  • Rotary Districts 3220, 9685, and 9560
  • The Rotary Foundation
  • Supporters of Sustainable Lanka and Rotarians for Sustainability initiatives

Together, these partnerships are helping create measurable and sustainable change where it is needed most.

More Than Infrastructure, It’s Hope

When the first child drinks clean water from a safe source…

When a young girl walks confidently into a clean, private toilet…

When a classroom connects to digital learning for the first time…

That is when impact becomes real.

Not in reports.
Not in budgets.
But in human lives.

Impact Statement

  • 6 schools undergoing transformation
  • 500–999 students expected to benefit directly
  • Improved attendance and student wellbeing
  • Enhanced dignity and safety for girls
  • Increased access to modern learning technology
  • Long-term WASH and education sustainability outcomes

Closing Reflection

Real change does not begin with buildings.

It begins when communities decide that children deserve better.

This project is proof that when compassion, collaboration, and sustainability come together, education becomes more than learning; it becomes an opportunity.

And that is where impact truly starts.
