A Silent Battle Happens Every Day Inside Sri Lanka’s Largest Children’s Hospital

Every parent remembers the moment they first heard the words:

“Your child has a heart condition.”

For many families across Sri Lanka, that moment is followed not only by fear but by uncertainty.

Will there be a surgery date in time?
Will the hospital have the equipment needed?
Will their child survive the wait?

At the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children in Colombo, the country’s largest pediatric hospital, thousands of children arrive each year needing urgent cardiac intervention for congenital heart defects. Yet despite the dedication of highly skilled doctors and nurses, limited equipment capacity has led to dangerous treatment delays. 

And for children born with serious heart conditions, time is not a luxury.

The Problem – When Demand Outgrows Capacity

Congenital heart disease (CHD) remains one of the leading causes of illness requiring pediatric cardiac intervention in Sri Lanka.

Lady Ridgeway Hospital serves not just Colombo, but also children from every province of the country, many from low-income and rural communities who cannot afford private healthcare. The hospital handles over 250,000 outpatient visits annually and serves as the national referral centre for pediatric cardiac care. 

Yet the growing demand has placed immense strain on existing facilities.

The Rotary Global Grant application identified several critical challenges:

• Limited access to life-saving pediatric cardiac surgeries 

• Long waiting lists are delaying urgent interventions 

• Inadequate specialised equipment for advanced procedures 

• Financial and emotional burdens placed on families 

• Lack of awareness and support systems for congenital heart disease patients 

For many families, every postponed surgery becomes another month of anxiety, travel, lost income, and fear.

The Solution – Rotary Steps Forward to Equip Hope

Through Rotary Global Grant GG2574120 – Empowering Little Hearts: Equipping the Pediatric Cardiac Care Centre, Rotary clubs and partners united to strengthen Sri Lanka’s pediatric cardiac care capacity with advanced medical equipment and training support. 

Approved by The Rotary Foundation, this humanitarian project delivers approximately USD 101,800 in critical equipment and implementation support to Lady Ridgeway Hospital. 

The project includes:

• Philips IntelliVue MX450 multiparameter monitoring systems 

• Reusable pediatric video laryngoscope systems 

• Ultrasound scanner equipment 

• Pediatric and neonatal probes 

• Capnography monitoring technology 

• Specialised training and installation support for medical teams 

These upgrades are designed to directly improve surgical readiness, patient monitoring, intensive care capability, and overall outcomes for children undergoing complex cardiac procedures.

Beyond the Immediate Impact – Strengthening Sri Lanka’s Healthcare Future

The impact of GG2574120 extends far beyond individual surgeries.

The project strengthens the long-term capability of Sri Lanka’s public pediatric healthcare system by:

• Expanding cardiac treatment capacity 

• Improving monitoring and intensive care standards 

• Reducing pressure on overcrowded surgical services 

• Enhancing training opportunities for healthcare professionals 

• Supporting faster diagnosis and intervention pathways 

• Improving health equity for rural and low-income families 

Importantly, the project also incorporates community outreach and awareness initiatives to improve understanding of congenital heart disease and encourage earlier intervention. 

Community-Driven and Built for Sustainability

One of the strongest features of this project is its sustainability framework.

Lady Ridgeway Hospital and the Sri Lankan Ministry of Health will maintain and operate the equipment as part of the country’s public healthcare infrastructure. The hospital has committed to ongoing operational support, staff training, maintenance, and integration into existing pediatric cardiac services. 

The project also establishes:

• Long-term monitoring committees 

• Continued staff education programs 

• Community awareness outreach 

• Collaboration with healthcare professionals and local stakeholders 

This ensures the impact will continue long after the equipment is installed.
