Oxygen therapy and ICU monitors for Sri Lanka's Northern and Eastern provinces

A Rotary Global Grant equipped COVID-19 treatment hospitals in Sri Lanka's Northern and Eastern provinces with oxygen therapy devices, patient monitors and oxygen concentrators.

By mid-2021, Sri Lanka's public hospital system was already stretched from a year of COVID-19 response, and the provincial hospitals of the Northern and Eastern provinces — designated frontline treatment centres — faced the same shortfall many hospitals had before them: sophisticated ICU equipment in short supply just as patient numbers climbed again.

A project built with the provinces' own health directors

Global Grant GG2124507 was hosted by the Rotary Club of Colombo South (District 3220), with the Rotary E-Club of Greater Sydney (District 9685) sponsoring internationally. The project team worked directly with the Provincial Directors of Health Services for both provinces, alongside the Australian Medical AID Foundation (AMAF) and the Rotary Clubs of Batticaloa and Nallur.

What the grant delivered

Backed by US$64,573 in funding, the project supplied hospitals in Jaffna and Batticaloa with:

  • 5 Optiflow high-flow nasal oxygen therapy units
  • 5 multi-parameter patient monitors
  • 12 portable oxygen concentrators (5-litre capacity)
  • 62 fingertip pulse oximeters

Built into the hospital, not around it

Every item was added to the receiving hospitals' own asset inventories, with a two-year manufacturer's warranty and biomedical engineering support already in place at each site. Sri Lanka's Ministry of Health committed to continuing its own funding to sustain the equipment for as long as it's needed.
