Six pieces of critical care equipment for Tiruvannamalai's only COVID-19 hospital

A Rotary Global Grant equips Government Tiruvannamalai Medical College Hospital — the sole COVID-19 treatment centre for a district of 2.7 million people — with a ventilator, ICU monitors, infusion pumps and an immunoassay system.

Government Tiruvannamalai Medical College Hospital (GTMCH) is the only hospital treating COVID-19 patients across its entire revenue district — a population of 2.7 million. By late April 2020, Tamil Nadu had recorded 1,885 confirmed cases and roughly 60 new cases a day, and GTMCH had opened a dedicated 100-bed COVID-19 isolation ward. Its stock of life-saving equipment, however, wasn't built for a caseload that size. Hospital authorities approached every Rotary club in Tiruvannamalai directly, asking for help.

Four clubs, one response

The Rotary Club of Tiruvannamalai (District 3231) took on the host role for Global Grant GG2012215, working with the district's Health Department to finalise the equipment list, invite quotations and select suppliers through competitive bidding. It was joined by three sister clubs — Tiruvannamalai Vegan, Tiruvannamalai Pearls, Tiruvannamalai Deepam and Tiruvannamalai Vengikkal — contributing cash toward the project. The Rotary Club of Glenhaven (District 9685) served as international sponsor.

What the grant delivered

Backed by US$46,300 in funding, the project supplied Government Tiruvannamalai Medical College Hospital with:

  • A ventilator
  • 5 syringe infusion pumps and 5 syringe pumps
  • 2 video laryngoscopes
  • 5 multi-parameter monitors
  • An immunoassay system, for faster and more accurate diagnostic testing

Handed over, not held onto

None of the equipment purchased is owned by a Rotary club or district — it belongs to Government Tiruvannamalai Medical College Hospital outright. Suppliers trained the hospital's doctors, nurses and paramedical staff directly, and GTMCH committed to servicing the equipment through annual maintenance contracts funded from its own government budget.
