Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) in Tiruchirappalli (Trichy) is the referral point for COVID-19 patients not only from Trichy itself, but from the neighbouring Ariyalur, Perambalur and Pudukkottai districts as well. As case numbers climbed in 2020, MGMGH's Dean was clear about the two things needed most: life-saving ICU equipment for patients, and hand-wash stations to protect the steady stream of visitors passing through.

Grounding the request in evidence

The Rotary Club of Tiruchirapalli Metro built Global Grant GG2012067 on more than a single conversation. The project team reviewed WHO guidance and published patient data, consulted healthcare professionals, and worked with the government agency coordinating Trichy's pandemic response — before concluding that ICU-level monitoring and treatment equipment was the most pressing gap. Sponsored internationally by the Rotary Club of The Hills-Kellyville (District 9685), the project moved from planning to handover across a single month, May 2020.

What the grant delivered

Backed by US$30,001 in funding, the project supplied Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital with critical care medical equipment for COVID-19 patients, plus 10 hand-wash stations installed for visitor use.

Negotiated for the long term

Where a supplier's standard quote offered only a one-year warranty, the Rotary Club of Tiruchirapalli Metro negotiated it out to three — after which the hospital takes on the annual maintenance contract itself. A five-member committee, comprising two doctors, two Rotarians and one community beneficiary, was formed to oversee the project once grant-funded activities concluded.

A partnership across two continents

Rotary Club of Tiruchirapalli Metro, as host sponsor, managed the full project lifecycle. Rotary Club of The Hills-Kellyville, as international sponsor, monitored progress from Australia. The project's US$30,001 budget was funded entirely through a District Designated Fund contribution from District 3000, matched dollar-for-dollar by The Rotary Foundation's World Fund.
