Ten ventilators in a month: equipping Karur's COVID-19 response

Karur Government Medical College Hospital is the sole point of care for COVID-19 patients not just in Karur, but across the neighbouring Dindigul and Namakkal revenue districts too. As the pandemic spread rapidly through the region in early 2020, the hospital's Dean was direct about what was missing: for patients developing respiratory complications, ventilators were the only effective treatment — and there weren't enough of them.

From interview to installation in 30 days

The Rotary Club of Karur Wings built Global Grant GG2011918 around that single, urgent gap. The project team spoke directly with healthcare professionals, social workers and the government agency coordinating Karur's pandemic response to define exactly what was needed. With the Rotary Club of The Hills-Kellyville (District 9685) sponsoring internationally, the entire project — from quotation to handover — ran inside a single month, 1 to 31 May 2020.

What the grant delivered

Backed by US$31,100 in funding, the project supplied Karur Government Medical College Hospital with 10 ventilators, plus transport and signage to get them installed and recognised on site. Vendors were chosen through competitive bidding, with a three-year warranty included.

A hospital's own commitment

Before the grant was finalised, the hospital's Dean committed in writing to running the new ICU capacity for the long term: providing trained staff, maintaining infrastructure, and taking on the annual maintenance contract once the vendor's three-year warranty ends. A six-member oversight committee — one doctor, four Rotarians and one community beneficiary — was formed to monitor the project after grant-funded activities concluded.

A partnership across two continents

Rotary Club of Karur Wings, as host sponsor, sourced quotations, ordered the equipment, and coordinated directly with the hospital. Rotary Club of The Hills-Kellyville, as international sponsor, monitored outcomes and verified grant records from Australia. Rotary Clubs of Karur Amaravathi and Karur Angels contributed funding alongside a District Designated Fund grant from District 3000.
